Vibrations in regular and disordered fractals : from channeling waves to fractons

چکیده
2014 Computer simulation of the vibrational properties of a Sierpinski carpet are reported. From the computed density of states, we find the spectral dimension d = 1.6 and the presence of singularities attributed to edges of the Brillouin zones of the underlying Bravais lattice. Then, we present mode patterns showing a new form of « channeling wave » at weak disorder becoming Anderson-localized at strong disorder. This is reflected in a non-monotonic variation of the participation ratio as a function of disorder. Analysing the mode patterns, we find no evidence supporting the conjecture of superlocalization. This study shows that the concept of a universal fracton is not appropriate to describe the two types of vibrational excitations we observe. J. Phys. Fractons in proteins: can they lead to anomalously decaying time autocorrelations?
Motivated by recent studies on the fractal nature of folded proteins, we analyze the time-dependent autocorrelation function < x (-->)(t).x(-->)(0) >of the distance between two points on a thermally vibrating fractal. Using fractons, the vibrational excitations of a fractal, we show that for both strongly underdamped and overdamped vibrations this correlation function decays anomalously, displa...
متن کاملPreferences, Descriptions, and Response Latency to Fractal Images Among Individuals With and Without Schizophrenia
Background: Early simple, low-cost diagnosis of schizophrenia may accelerate the beginning of the treatment process. Here, utilizing the projective tools, including fractal images, are some of the diagnostic aids. Objectives: This study aimed to compare the preferences, descriptions, and response latency to fractal images between schizophrenic and healthy individuals. Materials & Methods: In ...
متن کاملLOCALIZATION OF EIGENFUNCTIONS OF ELLIPTIC OPERATORS (Research in teams)
Vibrations and waves play a major role in many fields of physics and of engineering, whether they are of acoustic, mechanical, optical or quantum nature. In many cases, the understanding of a vibrational system can be brought back to its spectral properties, i.e. the properties of the eigenvalues and eigenfunctions of the related wave operator. In disordered systems or in complex geometry, thes...
متن کاملVibrational excitations in percolation: Localization and multifractality.
We discuss localized excitations on the incipient infinite percolation cluster. Assuming a simple exponential decay of the amplitudes ψi in terms of the chemical (minimal) path, we show theoretically that the ψ’s are characterized by a logarithmically broad distribution, and display multifractal features as a function of the Euclidean distance. The moments of ψi exhibit novel crossover phenomen...
متن کاملModelling Transport in Disordered Media via Diiusion on Fractals
When viewed at an appropriate scale, a disordered medium can behave as if it is strictly less than three dimensional. As fractals typically have non-integer dimensions, they are natural models for disordered media, and diiusion on fractals can be used to model transport in disordered media. In particular, such diiusion processes can be used to obtain bounds on the fundamental solution to the he...
